Triumph TR4A Radio and Speaker installation
Our radio is period. It has been referred to include an iPod cable. The issue with the TR4A is always where do you put the speakers. Ours used to be in the rear panel using the space between the fuel tank and the rear body to take the depth of the speakers. We are looking at a new solution now.

The download above relates to the rear seat installation on the left. It is quite a cool way of doing things.

Our Triumph TR4A speakers
Picture before strip down and restoration I think these speakers were from a marine application. They had chrome grills and were from around the mid 1960s. Perfect in date terms but nothing else. They use the gap between the fuel tank and rear body. Our plan is to look at a hidden installation where you can not see the speakers and right now we are looking at trying to make an installation out of the Bose Cube speakers. It maybe that we use the gap between the tank and the rear body to make the sub woofer. |
Our solution
This is probably madness but....... It seems to fit pretty well and the speakers will not be visible. Basically we have a single cube Bose unit. Amazingly the speakers have a curve on the back that allows installation and allows room for the loom. As they are white they match the colour of our car pretty well so that hides them even more. The location is in the front footwells under and behind the dash.
The bass reflex has been placed inside the triangle between the tank and the body. Right not we have just placed it there with cable ties but we will find a better fixing solution. Maybe we won't need a better solution.
The radio is an old Motorola unit that has been wired to take external audio sources like iPods and iPhones. As I write this I couldn't get the radio to work but all of the speakers are installed.

The bass reflex you can see at the end of this gallery was not used. You can see the 2 mid-bass speakers later down the page.
Speaker Control and Bass Reflex
We dismantled the above bass reflex and it was not a great sound from the speaker within inside the TR. So we bought a couple of mid-range bass speakers. Theses have been placed on foam to help with the bass and just cable tied in in the voids between the fuel tank and the sides of the body tub.
We tested the old interior cover (Red below with tape covering the speaker holes) that covers the fuel tank and it acts like a bass box as both front and back of the fuel tank area are enclosed. So all round a great success. So now with our aux power in sorted in the glove box we can run the sounds through the period radio and no speakers are to be seen at all. The small Bose cube speakers work a treat. Just wish we could get more out of the 'tone' from the old radio but it does sound period:-)
